Vince and I don't often go on official dates anymore (we're nearly 2 years into our marriage), but when we do we try to keep it interesting. We see each other (practically) every day. We eat meals together. We watch TV together. We talk about our jobs each night. It gets boring. So when we do get around to planning an actual date, we try to break out of our ruts and try something new. Enter hiking in Shawnee Mission Park. In preparation for our August trip to Peru, we decided to go on a little hiking date! Technically, I was cashing in my Valentine's Day gift of a no-complaints hike with Vince, but I decided to kill two birds with one stone.
There aren't a ton of trails specifically for hiking in Shawnee Mission Park, but the ones there are fantastic. We stayed on the brown hiking trail pictured above, and nearly finished the entire loop from campsite 10, around the dog park, and back again. We figured it'd be about a 4 mile hike, but it was much longer! I'd say it was closer to 5 or 6 miles if you completed the entire loop around the dog park and back.
Our hike was absolutely beautiful with perfect weather! I had fun practicing carrying my lenses in my pack and holding my camera in my hands. It proved to be a bit heavy after about a half hour. I think I'll have to fashion some sort of holder on the side of my pack for my camera so I don't have to constantly carry it. That way I don't have to carry it all the time, but I can have it handy.
Who can believe that this trail is right in the backyard of Kansas City?
The best part by far of the hike (aside from some great views) was the dog park area! I didn't realize it at the time, but all of the trails within that area are off-leash dog friendly! It was so fun walking along this part of the trail; you never knew what happy pup was going to run around the corner next!
We decided to head out late in the afternoon so we could stop along our hike for a sunset dinner. On our way out to Shawnee Mission Park, Vince said I could choose what we picked up for dinner. Naturally, I chose... Chipotle? If this wasn't odd enough, we both chose to order burrito bowls for our meals! You'd think this would be hard to carry around for a few hours in packs, but we positioned them to keep them upright and it was no big deal. No spills to report!
Beautiful views of the sunset after a delicious dinner :)
It's wonderful having parks like this so near our home in Kansas City. You don't have to travel too far to enjoy a beautiful chunk of the great outdoors!
