Imagine my pleasure when I checked my email Wednesday morning to find that my office had been closed for the day! I had already finished helping shovel the driveway so my chores for the day were essentially done. (Let's be honest, I had WAAAY more I could have been doing, but the magic of a snow day called my name.) After cleaning the kitchen and making the Fella a batch of salted brown butter crispy treats (out of pity that he did not have a snow day yesterday), I walked to JULIAN (@JulianKC) for lunch. I missed my JULIAN fix on Tuesday night when they were unable to open (stupid snow):
STOP 1: JULIAN
I was craving some BIGwich. So I ordered one. With extra fries.
And so did my mom. My family are creatures of habit when we eat at Chef Celina Tio's restaurants. Nine times out of ten, at least two of us will order the same thing.
You get fries on top of the pork BIGwich, but I can't resist these fries and house ketchup, so I ordered more on the side to split with my mom. I don't normally like fries, but these are such a perfect crunch:smoosh ratio.
STOP 2: BOULEVARD BREWERY
I've only taken one official tour of Boulevard Brewery, despite being an avid fan. When I saw Boulevard's tweet that they were open for tours yesterday, I just couldn't resist.
The tasting room had three limited edition beers on tap:
- Westside Rye
- Mid-Coast IPA
- and another IPA
These beers are only available in the tasting room and the Boulevard sample 12-packs that you can buy in stores. I tasted both, and would say that I'm most a fan of the Mid-Coast IPA.
You get four tastings total on the standard Boulevard tour: one small glass of Pale Ale and three small glasses of your choice. Seeing as it was 2:00 PM on a Wednesday and I had more to accomplish that day, I didn't take full advantage of my samples, but I did enjoy the Westside Rye and Mid-Coast IPA.
A lovely view of a lovely city in a lovely brewery :)
One new treat that I encountered on the tour was a view of the bottling facility in full force! Typically, this space is closed during the weekend (when I've taken my tours in the past) and they only bottle to order. Is that common for breweries to only bottle to order?
Enjoying my final bevy in the tasting room before heading onto my next snow day stop!
STOP 3: THE BELFRY
The Belfry is Chef Celina Tio's newest concept, located adjacent to her second restaurant Collection. The Fella, my dad, my brother and I are all members of The Belfry's beer club. We each have a glass housed at Belfry etched with our name and membership number (we're all single digits!) and a beer book to track our favorites. We even get discounts on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays on all food and beverage! Not a bad deal; not a bad deal at all.
My mom is even a member! Well, sort of. She isn't much of a beer drinker, but she wanted to be a member just like the rest of us, so Celina made a tiny glass just for my mom that sits next to my dad's in the beer cubbies.
I topped off my day with a nice Boulevard Rye on Rye. The Fella and I are holding two bottles hostage at his house.
All in all, Wednesday was a fantastic snow day! They're rare days, but I'm very glad that I took advantage of the day off to explore parts of KC that I don't often get to experience on a weekday.
