Guys, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again (many many times): Kathleen & Matt’s wedding was absolutely one for the books. I’m STILL talking about this wedding to anyone who’ll sit still long enough! It was that insanely amazing of a day!
When Kathleen, Matt, and I first sat down to talk about their wedding plans so many months ago, they told me how much they hoped it would snow on their January wedding day. “Yeah, right… This is the Midwest!” I thought. With a wish like that, you’d end up with a 70° heat wave and mud. But their engagement photos were full of unpredictable weather, so I really shouldn’t have been surprised by their wedding day!
Well, I don’t know who Kathleen & Matt called to make this happen but snow. it. did. A whole six inches! When I first arrived to Posh KC to capture Kathleen getting ready for her big day, I asked her how she felt about the weather. She thought it was absolutely wonderful and she couldn’t wait to get outside for photos! Relief swept through me. I was soooo wanting to take advantage of the beautiful snowfall as much as possible for photos. Of course, if Kathleen & Matt had wanted to stay inside where it was warm I would have completely understood and respected that. But I was for sure high fiving a hundred angels when Kathleen said she couldn’t wait to get outside ;)
After a quick stop at Kathleen & Matt’s downtown KC apartment to pick up the bridesmaids and Kathleen’s day-of details, we made the trek to Powell Gardens. Kathleen & Matt selected Powell Gardens as their venue because of its gorgeous chapel. Matt is an architect, so you can see why they were drawn to the chapel’s exceptional beauty and design. The two actually met in Architecture School at KU, but Matt will joke that Kathleen was the smart one and switched majors before it was too late :)
I drove separately with Kathleen’s dress, veil, and - oh yeah - their rings. Throughout the entire slippery drive I kept telling myself, “It’s okay… At least I don’t have the bride and groom in my car. Worst case if I crash is I have the dress and rings. You technically don’t need those things to get married. They would understand. It’s okay…”
But once we all reached Powell Gardens safely, all of the morning’s stresses melted away and we got down to simply enjoying the day that was unfolding in front of us. Kathleen & Matt and their wonderful families and wedding party truly came together to create the most beautiful celebration of love and family. Every detail effortlessly enhanced the couple’s vision for a fun party for every guest that braved the weather.
Kathleen looking absolutely stunning in her gown, as you can see! I literally gasped when I saw it hanging in her apartment and I couldn’t wait to photograph it. I can’t imagine a better design for her ballerina figure and cold weather temperatures. So. Dang. Classy. Matt was looking dapper as usual in his suit, and I just loved the subtle detailing on his tie. I like to think it was a subtle nod to the architectural design of Powell Garden’s chapel, but I could be making that up :)
Kathleen & Matt didn’t want to see each other before the ceremony, so I knew that Kathleen’s walk down the aisle was going to be extra special for both of them. I just love the sweet moments this can capture, and these two did not disappoint! After a beautiful ceremony, we captured some quick portraits of Kathleen & Matt as husband and wife! and headed to the reception to celebrate with their guests.
Kathleen & Matt aren’t partial to cake, so they opted for various flavors of cheesecakes for their desserts. I don’t know about you but that’s my kind of bold move! After sharing toasts, cutting the (cheese)cake, and tossing the bouquet and garter, it was time to dance the night away! Everyone, including Kathleen & Matt’s parents, all hit the dance floor and we just had the best time. I couldn’t have asked for a more energetic end to the evening :)
